What Is Personal Vision?

Personal Vision is a simple way to define what matters most in your life. It combines your Values, Purpose, and Roles into a clear framework that helps guide decisions over time.

Total Family has been singularly focused on non-financial legacy for over four years. I think about it every day. Not necessarily my own legacy, but how we can help more families approach it with clarity and intention.

The question we kept coming back to was simple. How do you start? What is the first step?

After years of iteration, we have clarity.

The first step in legacy is Personal Vision.

We define it like this:

Personal Vision = Values + Purpose + Roles

Values are what matter most to you.
Purpose is your why, your North Star.
Roles are the areas of your life that matter most.

Why Personal Vision Matters

Legacy work often feels abstract. People know it matters, but they do not know where to begin.

Personal Vision creates a starting point. It turns a big idea into something clear and usable. When you define your values, purpose, and roles, you begin to understand what you are actually trying to carry forward — not just financially, but personally.

This clarity often becomes the foundation for other forms of legacy work. From there, many families expand into shared alignment through Family Vision or begin capturing meaningful moments through Milestones.

How It Works in Practice

You can complete this exercise using Total Family’s software in less than 15 minutes. When you are finished, you can update your Vision at any time.

We track how it evolves so you can see how your roles and priorities change over time.

What It Unlocks

For advisors, the challenge is clarity. Many do not know which clients are truly interested in legacy work.

Interest is revealed through action.

If a client is not willing to spend 12 minutes completing a Personal Vision exercise, they are probably not ready. If they do complete it, that becomes a clear signal.

For families, Personal Vision creates shared language. It puts words around what matters most and helps align decisions over time.

Over time, this kind of clarity also makes other forms of legacy work — like writing legacy letters or preserving important family milestones — more natural and more meaningful.

Over the last four years, “Love” has consistently been the most selected value.

If that does not give you hope, I do not know what does.
